Today I’m going to show you how to improve your rap lyrics by building bridges.
Bridges
Now when it comes to rapping, you typically want your lines to support one another in some way as if it’s a stream of thought flowing throughout each line as opposed to each line being separate, random thoughts.
If two lines don’t seem to go together then build a bridge by writing a few bars between them that allow them to transition more smoothly into each other. Once you do this, also feel free to rephrase your original lines if it helps it sound more conversational.
EXAMPLE #1
BEFORE
These rappers can’t handle my skills
I’m so hungry I could eat a horse
These two lines obviously don’t go together, but with a little creativity, we can write a couple of bars between them to connect them together.
AFTER
These rappers can’t handle my skills
But unfortunately, their shortcomings don’t pay the bills
So I’m bout to get me a job, I’m sick of being this poor,
Cause right now I’m so hungry that I could eat me a horse
Now let’s look at one more example that isn’t as extreme. In this example, I have two lines that go together perfectly, but If I wanted to I could enhance these lyrics by adding more details between them.
EXAMPLE #2
BEFORE
Then I found out she’s was cheating on me
Now I’m drowning in the current from the pain of deceit
AFTER
Then I found out she’s was cheating on me
I’m not talking speculation I got receipts on IG
She was swapping spit with Mr. Pit down the street
Now I’m drowning in the current from the pain of deceit
Homework
So my challenge to you is this, write two lines, and then try to enhance them by writing two lines in between them and share your before and after examples in the comments section below.

And always remember, when it comes to rapping, there’s no rules, there’s only techniques!
Before:
I’m cold-hearted, you’re as warm as an ice tea
I’m love-blinded, you should know what I mean
After:
I’m cold-hearted, you’re as warm as an ice tea
I kill rappers’ careers, cut-throats, cold as ice is
I can be soft though, if I take things lightly
At times I’m love-blinded, you know what I mean
